August Trends

Hello FVS fashionistas! When does school start where you live? Florida tends to start earlier because we need to be out before our humid summers roll around. August fashion magazines saw a hint of back-to-school and acknowledging the weather change, but there was a lot more of following the past decades trend as well as a classic staple.

Perhaps contradictory, punk fashion was most popular this month. This might be due to a few features about legendary designer Alexander Wang, who is said to mix “street staples with a goth sensibility.” If you want to go all out, consider adding your favorite pins to a motorcycle jacket as seen in Harper’s Bazaar or patches to a denim  outerwear like in Nylon. Other looks include plaid (especially red), black lace, and of course, studs, spikes, rivets and safety pins. Too harsh for you? Try Marie Claire‘s tip of pairing hot pink.

Remember: the most punk piece to have in your closet is attitude! Don’t just do something because everyone else is. Play your best records, get involved with your community, and shake things up!

Everyone seems to be piling on denim! The versatile fabric dominated Nylon including a Phlemuns skirt made of other denim pieces. This trend could be considerably easier to achieve as one could simply wear some jeans and a chambray shirt. Marie Claire suggests a more expensive look with light knits. Want to test your style skills? Try wide-leg pants, culottes, and longer skirts, all seen in the aforementioned magazines.

Here’s a new style to try. It’s kind of amorphous and can go by different names or put in different trends. W magazine called it “Couch Couture” and Harper’s Bazaar had a boho section with dresses that fit. The idea is luxurious textures, jacquard weaving, and floral or palmette prints or patterns. If it looks like it should be inside a castle, put it on!

If you aren’t friends with a queen and can’t ask to borrow her curtains, consider stylish dresses with intricate paisley patterns or velvet details. Both Elle and Harper’s show off allover floral footwear.
